Description: The Sylhettis are the second largest ethnicity in the country of Bangladesh. Like the Bengali, their population is divided between Muslims and Hindus. The Sylhetti Muslims live primarily in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, and their capital city which also bears their name is regarded as one of Bangladesh's most important spiritual and cultural centers.
Prayer Points:
• Sylhetti Muslims were divided into high and low castes during the days of the Mughal empire in the 16th century, similar to the Hindu social hierarchy. Pray for deliverance from this system through Jesus Christ and that new believers might see one another as brothers who stand equal before God.
• The Sylhettis were traditionally a sea-faring people, and today a significant number of them live overseas, especially in the United Kingdom. Pray that Sylhetti who find Christ in the diaspora might be used of God to bring the gospel to their people and families.
• Sylhett is famous for its "sufi" shrines, which receive thousands of devotee visitors each year. These shrines are the tombs of Muslim mystics who are believed to still possess spiritual power. Pray that those seeking healing, deliverance and guidance might encounter the Lord Jesus and be set free.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, accelerate the movement of light and truth among the Sylhetti and draw them to the hope found in Christ alone.
Every year 6,000 Sylhetti Muslims die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
