Description: The Messiria are a subgroup of the Baggara tribes which inhabit Sahel region between Lake Chad and Southern Kordofan of Sudan. They are a nomadic people speaking a dialect of Arabic called Shuwa.
Prayer Points:
• Though the term Baggara literally means "cow herder" in Arabic, it has a negative connotation associated with it in Sudan, due to a reputation for raiding and slave- trading. Pray for the redemption of the Baggara from this history and that they might find grace and forgiveness in the cross.
• The Baggara were armed by the Sudanese government to make war against the Nubians, where they engaged in ethnic cleansing. This conflict continues to this day. Pray for peace and reconciliation to come to this region through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
• It is extremely difficult to maintain long-term work among the Baggara due to their nomadic lifestyle and the conflicts in the region. Pray that God might raise up indigenous missionaries from Sudan who will go live among them.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, you sent your Son Jesus to give his life for the Baggara that they might be saved and delivered from the power of the evil one. May your power come in their midst and drive out the darkness through the light of your Word.
Every year 5,000 Messiria Baggara die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
