Description: The Newar are a sino-Tibetan people who are indigenous to the Kathmandu valley in Nepal. Their language and culture have been heavily influenced by India, including the presence of the caste system among them and adherence to Hinduism.
Prayer Points:
• The Nepali Gorkha people conquered the Newars in the 18th century and have persecuted them for two centuries. They have actively sought to eradicate their language and ban its use. Pray for a truly indigenous Newar church to emerge which affirms the value of their language and culture with Christ at the center.
• The caste system was imposed on the Newar people over a period of a thousand years during the Malla period (AD 1201-1769). Pray for deliverance from this socially oppressive system and that the Newar might come to see each other as brothers and sisters in Jesus.
• Newar families employ family priests called Purohits, who act as spiritual advisors. Pray for this special group of spiritual leaders that they might become teachers of God's word, and lead their people to the righteousness found in Christ alone.
