Description: Iraqi Arab Shiites are the largest people group in Iraq. Although they are the oldest Shiite population in the world, a large number of them are the result of relatively recent conversions from Sunni Islam in the last century. They are concentrated in the Southern part of the country.
Prayer Points:
• Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Arab, heavily persecuted the majority Shiites in order to maintain power. Now the Shiites are in control and the Sunnis are wary of retaliation. This fear is driving sectarian violence throughout the country. Pray that the inability to forgive within these cultures will drive seekers to the Cross .
• Iran is the largest Shiite nation and they are seeking strong ties with the Shiite community in Iraq. Pray that the Christian revival taking place in Iran among former Shiites will have an impact on Shiites in Iraq.
• Muqtadā al-Ṣadr is one of the most influential Shiite leaders in Iraq, and founder of the Mahdi army which was responsible for many of the US military's casualties. Pray for his salvation and that his followers would desire to know the Prince of Peace who can set them free and their nation from centuries of violence.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, over two thousand years ago you brought your servants through exile into this region. Once again send modern day Daniel's and Nehemiah's into this land with the gospel of salvation.
Every year 5,000 Iraqi Arab Shiites die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
