Description: The Alawites are followers of Ali, from which their name derives. They are a branch of Shiite Islam known as the Twelver school, which refers twelve divinely ordained Imams. They believe the last Imam will return in the last days as the promised Mahdi, or Muslim messiah.
Prayer Points:
• The minority Alawites were used by the French to control the majority Sunnis. This has led to the current civil war in which over 200,000 have been killed. Pray for divine intervention in this conflict and for opportunities for God's people to show the love of Christ in the midst of it.
• The Alawites have many unorthodox Islamic beliefs, some of which are influenced by contact with Christianity. Pray that these conceptual bridges might lead them to a greater understanding of the gospel message.
• The Alawites have treated Christians well, and many Christian groups have supported the current Alawite regime. Pray for Christians in navigating this conflict, and for open doors to share their faith with both Alawites and Sunnis.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, in the midst of the tragedy and chaos in Syria, you are still sovereign God. May your purposes alone be fulfilled for the Alawite people through knowledge of your Son Jesus.
Every year 13,000 Alawite die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
