Description: The Nafusi are a confederation of Berber tribes living primarily in the Nafusa mountains of Libya who are united by a common language and a heterodox version of Islam known as Ibadism. For centuries they have been regarded as heretics by Sunni Muslims and even today are treated with suspicion and disdain by Libyan Arabs.
Prayer Points:
• The Nafusi were on the forefront of the civil war to dislodge Gaddafi and in the aftermath of the chaos succeeded in carving out their own independent region in the Nafusa mountains. Pray that this the independence would not shut out the gospel but rather would open doors for gospel witness.
• The Nafusi are experiencing a cultural renaissance and are now able to freely celebrate their Berber heritage, which had been suppressed under Gadaffi. Pray for the translation of the Bible in their language and for its warm reception as a means to strengthen their God ordained heritage.
• The Ibadis have a uniquely tolerant view of other religions. Pray that this openness might lead many to seek a deeper understanding of the Scriptures and the true nature of Jesus, whom they highly revere.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, the Nafusi are not beyond the reach of your love. May your grace draw them closer to your eternal plan for their people.
Every year 1,500 Nafusis die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
