Description: The North Indian Muslims are Urdu speaking peoples living primarily in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The Urdu language is a mixture of Hindi, Persian, Arabic and Turkic, reflecting the major influences of various migrations from conquests over centuries. Today their society has four major "noble" castes: Sayyids, Shaikhs, Moghuls and Pathans.
Prayer Points:
• The Sayyids claim descent from Muhammad, and as such, many are Imams, religious instructors and spiritual leaders. Pray for the redemption of this spiritual heritage in Christ and for their future ministry as pastors, teachers and evangelists.
• The Sheikhs claim descent from Arab and Persian traders. They have been discriminated against by Hindu nationalists. In 2002 Hindu rioters massacred hundreds of Sheikhs, and destroyed at least 100,000 of their homes and 15,000 businesses. Pray that God might use his people to be brokers of His peace and agents of healing and reconciliation.
• The British found the Pathan to be outstanding soldiers, forming many regiments with them. Today many find employment in India's military. Pray for healing from centuries of warfare in their history and that this warrior spirit might be transformed into a fight against the Evil One.
