Description: The Bengali are the third largest ethnicity and the largest unreached people group in the world. The majority converted to Islam beginning in the 12th century, but a significant minority are still Hindu. They are believed to descend from an ancient Dravidian tribe called the Bang people.
Prayer Points:
• The most important religious festival for the Bengali Hindus is called Durga Puja. Over ten days they worship the goddess Durga who defeated an evil demon in Hindu folkflore. Pray that the spiritual bondage over the Bengali would be broken and that their hope for redemption might be met in Christ alone.
• The Bengali have largely rejected radical Hinduism, but many have shown interest communism. Pray that their desire for social justice might lead them to Jesus, the ultimate social reformer.
• The great missionary William Carey made an incredible contribution to Bengali society in the 19th century. Pray that his spiritual and transformational legacy would continue to inspire Bengalis to come to Christ and that others would follow in his footsteps of bringing the gospel in word and deed to this region.
