Description: The Banjara are a traditionally nomadic people which are concentrated in the northwestern belt of India, but which can also be found scattered throughout the country. Their language called Lambadi seems to be related to the language spoken by the gypsies (Domari/Romani) in the Middle East and Europe.
Prayer Points:
• The Banjara have a rich history of folk music and dances, which are used to commemorate every significant occasion such as marriage and harvests. Pray that the church might become truly contextual among the Banjara and that their artistic traditions might be transformed by the Holy Spirit for Christian worship and evangelism.
• The Banjara are governed by traditional elder councils at the village level. Pray for favor with those rulers to allow the proclamation of the gospel and the establishment of churches in every Banjara community.
• The Banjara were branded as a criminal tribe by the British and their movements curtailed as a result. They were forced to form separate communities and a stigma of mis-trust still hovers over them today. Pray that God's purposes for the Banjara might be restored in Christ.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, strengthen your people among the Banjara and empower their witness with supernatural authority and grace.
Every year 60,000 Banjaras die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
