Description: The Afghan Turkmen live in the northern part of Afghanistan, straddled along the border with Turkmenistan. Many of them fled into Afghanistan following the Soviet takeover of their homeland. They are farmers and pastoralists, some of which live a semi-nomadic lifesytle.
Prayer Points:
• There is ongoing fighting with the Taliban in the Turkmen areas of Afghanistan, which is hindering long-term work among them. Pray for peace to come to this region, and for open doors for missionary work.
• The Afghan Turkmen are much more Islamic than those in Turkmenistan, who underwent 70 years of atheistic communism. Pray that God might use the emerging church in Turkmenistan to send workers to reach them.
• Over 60,000 Afghan Turkmen live in refugee camps in Pakistan. They are subject to inhumane conditions and abject poverty. Many thousands are now making a living through carpet-making, though their skilled labor is being exploited by profiteers. Pray for an effective ministry among these refugees that will address both their spiritual and physical needs.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, may your compassion for the Afghan Turkmen breakthrough. Though they have known only war and suffering their entire lives, may they experience the peace which only you can bring.
