Description: The Benshangul Berta are a Nilo-Saharan people who originate from eastern Sudan and migrated to Western Ethiopia in the 16th century. To protect against attack the Berta settled in mountain regions. (The word Benshangul refers to a sacred stone in the Menge mountains where they first migrated.)
Prayer Points:
• The Berta were victims of slave-raiders from Sudan and even their own rulers profited from selling their people into slavery. Pray for spiritual healing from this historical injustice through the eternal freedom found in the gospel.
• The Berta nominally converted to Islam in the 18th century, and have only recently become serious about their Muslim faith in the last thirty years. Pray that this trend might be reversed and for their eyes to be opened to see through the deception of Islam.
• Bible translation efforts among the Berta have been hindered by local muslim extremists. Pray for the renewal of this project and for the protection of those whom God is calling to this work.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, strengthen and empower your church in Ethiopia to send workers to the Berta. May they find open hearts and receptive homes eager to know your word and embrace your Son Jesus.
Every year 3,000 Benshangul Berta die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
